Safety Tips
White water rafting is not just for the crazy mountain people anymore. This popular sport is now more mainstream than ever before. Many are now engaged and addicted to it including people living near Kampar in the state of Perak, Malaysia.
But there are a few steps that you and your family can take to ensure that your white water adventure is a good one that you will look back on your experience in a positive way for years to come. Here are safety rules to follow.
1. Always wear a life jacket or flotation device
Wearing a life jacket doesn't mean it will save your life. So proper wearing of it is a must. All buckles must be clipped and you should pick a jacket that fit and feel comfortable you.
You have to get a jacket that fitted so you can breathe yet the jacket should not be able to be pulled up over your head.
Always ask help assistant or ask questions if you're not sure what you are doing with your guide.
2. Wear protective gear.
3. Hold the paddle properly.
Holding the paddle properly can be a huge safety concern. Keeping your hand over the “T” grip will keep control of the paddle and cushion the blow if it should happen.
Ask your professional commercial guide for the proper technique.
4. Know the proper swimming techniques.
If you choose to swim to the shore, swim to the shore. NEVER stand up in moving current. Most guides never walk in water over their shins.
This prevents a situation called “Foot Entrapment” which is where you put your foot in a smaller hole or crack in the bottom of the river.
This is not a good place to be but it is so easy not to get in this situation, just don’t walk in the river. It is just that easy.
5. Don not Panic
No matter what happens, don't panic. Panicking can make a bad situation worse.
6. Listen to your guide attentively
Your experienced Raft guide is trained to know exactly how to handle any type of situation encountered while on the river.
So listening to them during the safety talk will save your life.
